I got a new toy for my birthday!



Sunday I went out and shot it for the first time (making 3 times shooting at all). I shoot with the SCA and I don't know how much their rules have in common with standard rules, but I shot for a score for the first time. I even managed to hit the target at 40 yards once (I've never shot more than 20 yards before in my life and it's only a 28lb bow so I wasn't making it to the target much). At any rate I scored right in the middle of novice with a high score of 13 and average score of 11.5.

Anyway here's my best attempt at a speed round: I'm the wooden arrows with brown and yellow feathers.



I only got off four arrows in 30 seconds, but, at least I hit the hay barrel with all of them, and the target with three! No chasing arrows for me that time (for once).

I used to have a bow like that--the nice thing is that you can replace the limbs if you want to go up in draw weight (to a point, anyway).

Yeah, that's exactly what I was told by the guy who runs archery at his house here, and why he told me to go for that style. Theoretically I should go up quickly at first - though I don't know, I'm not exactly weak after heavy fighting. :)

I really wish I still had my old takedown--I'm too out of shape for my composite and I'm getting into bad habits of form.

They're also nicely compact.

That is a great result, most novices get flustered by the timed round and fling at least half their arrows wide.

My first bow looked just like that. And also, let me be all envious for a minute of your weather. Here in new england, it is getting cold, wet, and dark early. I don't shoot well in those conditions.

Yeah, I'm in Southern California. We're just getting into the good season for shooting - but then again most of the summer it's just too hot to do anything. :)
